The Teaching Resource Unit was initially established as a Medical Illustration Unit of the School of Medicine in 1970. Its main objective was the production of materials to support:
- Medical Education
- Research
- Publication
- Patient Care
The Teaching Resource Unit is located in Clinic 2 (first floor) at the University Teaching Hospital. The Unit has over the years enjoyed marvelous reputation in the production of quality teaching materials both locally and internationally.
From 1998 the Unit took over the Medical Illustrations Unit and increased the number of services, by including commercial services.
In the recent past, the Unit, Through the SOM project funded by the British Aid, has acquired modern equipment which has made the unit one of the best-equipped illustration and teaching resource centres in Zambia.
The Unit is now providing the following services:
Colour Scanning ( from photos, negatives, slides etc)
Slide production / animation ( for teaching and seminar presentation)
Audio Visual Equipment for Hire i.e. Overhead /Slide projectors, video/ computer projectors,
Graphic Reproduction ( desk top publishing, finished artwork, Business card, invitation cards)
Professional Photography ( video production, still photography, photo finishing etc)
Photocopying and Telephone facility
Printing and Spiral Binding
As a way of sustaining itself Teaching Resource Unit charges a cost recovery fee on most of their services. Whatever little profit made is used to subsidise the production of other materials especially teaching materials.
Library of slides
The Unit has over the years produced and kept thousands of clinical slides and photographs which can be borrowed or duplicated for presentation on various topics. This includes specially photographed slides from the microscope. The Unit is actually a pioneer in slide photographing and processing.
This unit has now been absorbed by the Department of Medical Education Development
