Zambia has only one Medical School which is situated at the Ridgeway Campus. The Ridgeway Campus is on Nationalist Road opposite the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and it is about 10 kilometres from the Main Campus of the University of Zambia. The mission statement of the School is to serve as a centre of excellence in the provision of education in health sciences, quality patient care and research oriented towards addressing the challenges in the community.
As a key training institution in the country, the School has a major role in producing the medical personnel needed to staff and manage the various health institutions in Zambia. Therefore, in line with the National Health Reforms the School has revised the curricula with a focus on Community Based Education (CBE) in order to produce graduates who will be capable of working satisfactorily not only at tertiary level of care but at secondary and primary care levels as well.
I am happy to say that since its inception, the School has managed to maintain the standards of medical education and continues to enjoy a good reputation within the sub-region and indeed the world over. I am also pleased to report that the School continues to adapt and adopt current innovations in medical education in order to be suitably prepared for the challenges of the century.
